I agree with Niki. Nico made 1 move to defend and Lewis was not along side, so Nico doesn’t have to yield anything to him. And Lewis was way over aggressive for the third turn on the first lap.

Niki has a point but they both messed up IMO. Hamilton messed up first but Rosberg messed up worse.

You can blame either driver depending upon who you are. Rosberg had the right to block and Hamilton had a huge run and nowhere to go. A total racing incident that will have an effect on the rest of the season and potentially beyond that.

The blame lies with Hamilton on this one, Rosberg’s move was deliberate and legal, Lewis should have backed out a bit. I’m guessing he got a bit frustrated after another (somewhat) bad first corner this season, while on the other hand Rosberg has seemingly gained a lot of confidence and drives a lot more assertively, rather than letting Hamilton just run around him like last year.

I wouldn’t say it was aggressive, he had a speed advantage over Nico so wanted to get past him but Nico didn’t want that to happen so closed the door on Lewis even though he was alongside him enough that the rules should be on Lewis’s side

That is how I saw it as well. Hamilton had a huge run and Nico left him no option except to go off track. I agree that this will have repercussions long term.

if I had to be on one side of the fence then yes I would back the fellow Brit but as I’m a JB/Mclaren fan I would see it as Rosberg trying to get back at Hamilton for previous seasons

I didn’t see it as a legal move as Lewis had his wing alongside Nico before he was on the grass

Entitled to space? Wut.

There are rules that if a driver is along side you give him some room not run him off the track

Lewis was never along side until he drove into the grass. And its the passing car’s responsibility to make a clean pass.

There are also rules that the lead car has essentially right of way. they’re cited every time that Hamilton aggressively blocks.

From the Sporting Regulations:

Any driver defending his position on a straight, and before any braking area, may use the full width of the track during his first move, provided no significant portion of the car attempting to pass is alongside his. For the avoidance of doubt, if any part of the front wing of the car attempting to pass is alongside the rear wheel of the car in front this will be deemed to be a ‘significant portion’.

That’s what the stewards will probably be discussing: Rosberg initiated his first move before Hamilton’s wing was alongside, so technically it’s allowed, but it’s also possible the stewards have them share the blame.

As a fellow JB & McLaren fan I think we can both agree that both drivers made a “cheeky” move that JB would not have made in either position.

I hear you but...these are teammates. Maybe it is just my cycling background but at the end of the day you are supposed to kinda look out for your teammate.

Yeah, for sure, it should never have happened. I’m certain this has quite lot to do with Rosberg’s newfound, Hamilton-matching aggressiveness: last year he would’ve yielded, even if he would’ve been the one attempting an identical overtake.

Let’s hope they both learn from this and both back off a bit.

Ok, F1 noob here. Why was Hamilton racing so hard (and so early too) against his teammate? Now they're both screwed.

I watched it (repeatedly) at quarter speed on YouTube, and not only was Hamilton not yet alongside when Nico started moving right, but I think Nico actually started moving right before Hamilton did, as an attempt to keep Hammy from being able to try for the inside line at turn 4 and instead force Hamilton to try to make the pass on the outside. Hambone, with better exit speed and the plan already in his mind to get dat inside line, opted to turn even sharper right and try to reach the gap before Nicolodeon could fully shut the door. Missed it by this much.

Take a look at quarter speed, see what you think

video removed by F1M, however with this image I found he has a wheel alongside Nico whilst still (just about) on the track
